A PACE Day to Remember

2010 Utah PACE DayPhoto and Words by Brandon Christiansen

The first ever PACE Day has come and gone, but the memories of this spectacular event still dance like sugar plums in our heads.

We went into the weekend expecting thunderstorms and torrential rain, but as Moses parted the Red Sea, Utah PACE parted the clouds and blessed us with a beautiful day of cars, music and friends. The turn-out was nothing short of impressive with over 150 cars and 500+ visitors making the trek to Orem, Utah.

Utah PACE’s goal of uniting all car enthusiasts of every kind was realized 10 fold as everyone who came to show their precious metal appreciated everyone else, regardless of make or model. Utah PACE co-founder and PACE Day organizer Josue Andrade stated “The environment was just what we were expecting. Mitsubishi owners where mingling with Subaru guys and the muscle car guys where admiring the import scene and vice versa.”

Utah PACE co-founder and PACE Day show organizer James Crosby said “I can’t even count the number of people that came up to me to tell me about how this is the scene and atmosphere they have been looking for here in Utah.   I think there was a big hole that was missing in getting all the automotive enthusiasts in Utah together.”

PACE Day successfully filled that hole, providing car guys and gals from Utah and the surrounding states a forum and venue to share their passion. While doing so they’ve also helped a worthy cause as proceeds from shirt and sticker sales were donated to Primary Children’s Hospital. Plans for PACE Day 2011 are already in the works and you know that the Daily Derbi will be there to see who the real wheel men and women of Utah are!

Stay tuned for full features and reviews on some of the amazing cars found at the show!

Utah Event: Utah PACE Day August 28th

At one point or another in our automotive lives we’ve felt the urge to belong; to be a part of something bigger than ourselves. One group of Utah automotive enthusiasts felt that urge and decided to do something about it. They envisioned a world of automotive love and appreciation, where Evo could befriend STi , and Corvette could be pals with Viper. It would be a world with no boundaries, complete acceptance, and only one rule: that you love all things automotive! Thus, Utah’s Performance Automotive Club of Enthusiasts, or Utah PACE, was born.

Although it started rather humbly with just 5 original members, word soon spread across the Wasatch front of this new forum. Soon hundreds of Utah enthusiasts joined to discuss their favorite cars with other local enthusiasts.  Utah PACE took the standard forum model and the exclusive car club ideal and kicked them to the curb, thus opening their doors to any and all Utah car enthusiasts.

They are once again opening their doors to all of us Utah car enthusiasts by inviting us to participate in the first ever PACE Day. PACE Day is a car meet on a grand scale. Think Cars and Coffee but with more cars, more diversity, and the presence of some the State’s top automotive vendors. There will be raffle giveaways for many prizes including 2 separate 3 pull sessions on Ziptie Dynowerks’ new All Wheel Drive dyno.

Utah PACE Day begins this Saturday, August 28th, at 10am and runs until 4pm. It’s free to all participants and offers food, drinks, vendors and live music. So shine up that ’86 Dodge Omni GLH, bring that beloved ’92 Ford Escort, and mingle with all the other Utah car enthusiasts! You know we’ll be there, come rain or shine!

Find of the Day: Best Minivan Ad EVER!

During a recent search for the perfect kart racing support vehicle we came across what has to be the best minivan, nay, the best car ad we’ve ever seen!  In most ads you’ll find sellers trying to hype up their vehicle and “forget” to mention certain things.  The seller of this “vintage” 1996 Dodge Grand Caravan took a hilariously honest approach that had us running for our check books!

Here’s what caught our attention:

Your Cash our Clunker: The Cash for Clunkers program is long gone, but we’ll still take your cash and give you our clunker.
DON’T MISS OUT: Thanks to last year’s Cash For Clunkers program when the government gobbled up 700,000 clunkers and smashed them to smithereens, our 1996 Dodge Caravan with a broken transmission is now a one-of-a-kind rare find. We could have sold out and let the taxpayers buy our van for $3,500. Which is way too bad for us because we totally missed out on trading our clunker for a super-sized, biggie CAR LOAN. (I mean wasn’t it excessive debt that got us into this economic mess in the first place.) I can’t believe we didn’t jump at a government sponsored program that encouraged individuals to further increase their personal debt.

The seller then goes on to say:

• TRANSMISSION: Needs replacing
• WARRANTY: Yeah right.
• INCLUDED: Dents, scratches, worn upholstery.
• FREE WITH PURCHASE: All-You-Can-Eat samples at Costco.

FINANCING: Bad credit, no credit, bankruptcy, divorce — who cares. We’ll only accept cash.
MUST SEE: A large, comfortable minivan perfect for a large Utah family. Has seating for 7 passengers and extra kids can be strapped to the luggage rack on top. Powerful V6 engine will reduce the number of minutes you’re late for school drop offs, soccer practices, and church meetings. Power Door Locks keeps your kids in the car while you make a dash into the post office. Cruise Control makes it easier to text and apply makeup. AM/FM Stereo turns up loud enough to drown out the fighting in the backseat. No worries over keeping the interior pristine, we’ve already trashed it.

This ad is pure car advertising gold and the above is just an abbreviated version. To see the full ad and to put an offer down on this pristine purplish beast go here (if it’s still available!).

Breaking: Salt Flats Enzo Set to Take the Stage

Twin Turbo Ferrar Enzo

A few days ago we reported about the annual “sacrament of speed” that is Speed Week and how one of the world’s first (if not only) Twin Turbo Ferrari Enzos would be making a run at the record.  Well, here are the first “unofficial” photos of said Ferrari, found only on the DailyDerbi (of course).

As you can see from the images, this car and its owner are serious about running on the salt. Skinny tires run flush with the body work and a re-worked, more high-speed aero friendly nose has been added. The car was dyno’d over the weekend and reportedly put down a respectable 850 horsepower at low boost (11-12lbs). It is believed by weeks end, the boost will be up as high as 18-20lbs, putting it into the 1000hp club.

The car is currently on its way out to the Flats to participate in the last few days of Speed Week. We can only speculate what kind of MPH’s this beast will achieve, but by Friday we will all know. We wish our fellow Utah Ferrari fan good luck on his maximum velocity endeavor and of course we’ll keep you posted!

Update-

We just got word from our source explaining the pictured radical nose in more detail.  What you see here is actually a carbon fiber nose-over kit developed by a fluid dynamics engineer. The engineer found that the stock Enzo body would become aerodynamically unstable at the nose of the car at speeds above 225mph. This carbon fiber nose-over kit was developed to help maintain the Enzo’s stability at speeds approaching 300mph.

We’ll keep our “nose” to the grindstone (lame joke) with further updates!
