There has been yet another tragedy in motorsport today. Rising American Le Mans Series driver, Sean Edwards, was killed in a practice accident today at Queensland Raceway in Australia. Edwards was in the passenger seat of a Porsche 996 Cup car instructing Will Holzheimer when the car slammed into a tire wall at an estimated speed of 124mph killing Edwards instantly. The car then burst into flames and the driver had to be extricated from the car. The driver is in intensive car with life threatening injuries.
Edwards had raced for NGT Motorsport all season in ALMS but after a weekend conflict with co-driver, Henrique Cisneros, was removed from the drivers list for Petit Le Mans.
Edwards is the son of former F1 driver, Guy Edwards, who helped rescue Niki Lauda from his crash at the Nurburgring in 1976. He drove his father’s car during the filming of the Ron Howard film Rush.
2013 has been riddled with tragedy in the motorsport world as we have lost Dick Trickle, Jason Leffler, Allan Simonsen, Roger Miller, and Maria de Villota.
We send our condolences to the Edwards family and their friends.
