CR-Z To Add Fun?

By | December 7, 2010

Rumors of a gas-only high-performance Honda CR-Z have surfaced. Honda is currently developing a 1.6L turbo I4 at its Tochigi R&D center. The 1.6L iVTEC turbo will offer the power of a 2.0L engine but with better fuel economy.

The base gas engine is expected to produce 160hp and a higher-performance version, possibly a Type-R or Si model, will have 200hp. The new 1.6L turbo is expected to power the Civic and other small Hondas as well.

This new engine should make the CR-Z immeasurably funner than the current hybrid car with a measly 112hp 1.5L I4 engine and 14hp electric motor. The sooner the car debuts the better because sales of the hybrid coupe have started to slow.

These new power train options should appease CRX fans who were disappointed by the hybrid abomination. Now if we could only talk Honda into adding the SH-AWD system this car would be nearly perfect for a daily driver — or a competitor to Ford’s WRC Fiesta!
