Dear BMW: Thanks for the new 5-series

Some say sex sells. BMW would probably counter by arguing that a good product sells itself without the aid of exposed legs and a lowered neck line. But I would argue that the new BMW 5-series gets the job done using a combination of awesome engineering and a pure automotive sexy-time design.
First impressions show that several lines have been infused in the hood and the whole car seems to be “rounded off” and a bit more polished. Then you’ll notice the backside has transformed into what looks like the beautiful back end of a 3-series…and that’s a good thing. The interior also maintains the strict German saloon standard of being spacious, focused, and very well executed. Of course, the BMW performance aspect is still present in the new 5-series with four different gasoline engine options, including a twin turbo V8 variation, and a pointless diesel version.
But while the new style is different in many ways, it hasn’t completely deviated from the now old style, both on the interior and the exterior. Just enough to smoothed the ruffled feathers of journalists who didn’t particularly like the previous 5-series design but loved the car. Jalopnik is even quoted saying, “a sincere thanks to Mr. Adrian van Hooydonk for not making another ugly BMW.”
I completely disagree that the old style was “ugly” per se (beauty is truly in the eye of the beholder) but I do tip my hat to BMW for improving on the design of the 5-series and showing that those protractor-loving Germans have still got it.

Excellent observation. That was my first question as well.

I’ve seen a couple of the new hatchback/ gran turismo 5 series tooling around Europe, and I have to say, it looks much better in person than in pictures. The regular 5 series should be much better, I imagine.

Oh man, I’ll have to see a GT with my own eyes to believe it. I don’t think those things could ever look good from any angle in any lighting.
