Genesis Coupe Gains Power, Gears and Drive Wheels

By | March 15, 2011

The Hyundai Genesis coupe will get the new direct injected version of the 3.8L V6 that was previously announced for the Genesis sedan. Direct-injection pumps power up from 306 hp and 266 lb-ft to 333 hp and 291 lb-ft — a noticeable increase. It will now top the 312 hp Camaro and the 305 hp Mustang and Charger. Did we mention it is lighter than all of the domestic “Muscle Cars?”

Six-speed manual will still be available but the automatic may receive two more forward gears. The eight-speed tranny is an in-house design that will be available in the sedan.

The camouflaged car in the pics implies a mid-model facelift for the coupe. Also the snow pics suggest the possibility of a future all-wheel drive option. Which, according to Car and Driver, Hyundai CEO John Krafcik said “is headed for the Genesis coupe at some point.”

Sounds like a Jr. GTR to us! It may be down nearly 200 horsepower but it will probably be the lightest and most affordable 330+ hp RWD based AWD car available! Although we love the Mustang, we know not everyone wants an overweight retromobile.

I’ve always liked the Genesis Coupe. I didn’t know it was lighter than a Mustang and a Camaro.
