JDM Legends Grand Re-Opening

JDM Legends Grand Re-Opening Nissan Skyline

Founded a few short years ago by Trey Cobb in 2009, JDM Legends is growing.  So much, in fact, that they were bursting out of their old place and needed to move.  They found just the place in Murray, UT just off I-15, and held a celebration inviting anyone and everyone who wanted to see their work.  Fans from all over came and filled the parking lot and the side of the street about a 1/4 mile each direction.  The open house style event quickly turned into a car show featuring JDM Legends’ cars both past and present and cars from their admirers ranging from a new Subaru BRZ to several old Skylines and Datsun 510s.  I attended with my father who brought along his orange 1973 Datsun 1200.

If you are unfamiliar with JDM Legends here is what you should know: they specialize in importing classic Japanese cars and parts from Japan as well as restoring or modifying them.  All the cars that are imported are done so legally and are road legal in all 50 states.  Walking through their new digs I found a Datsun 510 that was stripped and being completely rebuilt with late-model Nissan parts.  Next to it was a 1970s Toyota Celica in the nude, or rather, bare sheet metal and also gutted, as well as a 1980s Toyota Starlet.

Head into the next room and behold the beauty!  Two early 70s Skylines, an early Mazda RX7, and a Datsun 240Z!  This room looks more like a showroom than a shop with three of the cars being complete.  The 240Z is still being built.  Very nice.  Besides the cars there is plenty of JDM artwork and a Rising Sun flag on the wall and parts shelved on the walls.

Stepping back outside and there is a wide variety of cars, Nissan/Datsun having the strongest presence, with their owners proudly showing them off, no matter how far along in their project.  The two most notable cars however weren’t because of the work done on them but rather the rarity of one and the other being brand new.

The new car was a white Subaru BRZ.  The first one I have seen in person.  They are a good looking car.

The other was a Datsun NL320(a what?!?).  I had never heard of them before but I learned that Datsun only made 1000 of them world wide.  It is a unique pickup truck, built between 1963-65, which featured a uni-body design creating a sleek, sporty look.

We will continue to look forward to what JDM Legends will have to offer with their awesome work and projects.  If you missed the event, don’t fret; rumor has it they will hold monthly meets on Saturdays.  Keep watch on their Facebook page for details.
