Models That Didn’t Make The Cut.

We thought a list of automobiles that won’t live on (and our opinion of them) is a fitting for the end of the year. In alphabetical order:

Cadillac DTS, STS. The large Cadillacs will sell for about half of 2011 when both will be replaced by the XTS. We say about time; these two have been around mostly unchanged for what seems like an automotive eternity.

Chevrolet Cobalt. Although an improvement over the Cavalier it still wasn’t competitive in the small car set. It’s being replaced by the Cruze which should be competitive. Other than the SS model the Cobalt won’t be missed.

Chrysler PT Cruiser. Is this still around? Apparently the PT was supposed to be discontinued a year earlier but Chrysler and Fiat held out one more year. It won’t be missed — by anyone.

Honda Element. Being discontinued presumably because of poor fuel economy and slow sales. The Element’s most redeeming feature was the spray out rubber floor for outdoor enthusiasts and pet owners.

Kia Borrego, Rondo. Who knew? A body-on-frame SUV (Borrego) from Kia? Apparently not too many. New for 2009 it struggled to make it to the end of 2010. The Rondo was some strange tall wagon-thingy. Like a small Mazda5. It certainly won’t be missed because Kia sold four times as many in 2009 than they did in 2010.

Lexus SC430. Again: Is this still around? The SC430 was Lexus’s attempt at a Mercedes-Benz SL competitor. It failed straight out the gate and looked more like a used bar of soap. The older SC300/400 model was a re-badged JDM Toyota Soarer mildly popular for drifting. The retractable-hardtop SC was just expensive with a backseat for nobody.

Lincoln Town Car. With the Taurus Interceptor replacing the Crown Victoria for police work and the announced cancellation of Mercury — including the Grand Marquis — the Town Car didn’t have much time before if finally joined its sisters in car heaven. It’s nice to get big, slow boats off the road.

Mercury Everything. Founded in 1939 by Henry Ford’s son Edsel (another deceased Ford division) Mercury struggled most of its life trying not to be a re-badged Ford with a pretty chrome grill. Not since the 1967-1970 Cougars has Mercury had a car worth a second look by enthusiasts. The last of the vehicles: Grand Marquis, Milan and Sable sedans and the Mariner and Mountaineer SUVs were nothing more than chrome plated Fords. The great name Mercury was the Roman God of Trade and Athletics, as well as a Messenger known for his swift flight because of his winged sandals and winged sun hat. He will also now be known for ushering the Mercury brand down to the after-life.

Mitsubishi Raider. Another re-badge, this time of the Dodge Dakota. On the market since 2005 the Raider has been virtually invisible to nearly everybody.

Volvo V70. The larger of Volvo’s two station wagons. The smaller V50 may be on the way out too after 2011. The last of the cool station wagons on the market.

Overall we haven’t lost anything special. All the sports cars from affordable to exotic are all still with us. Most of the discontinued cars were re-badged, worthless or being replaced by something better.

I hate 90% of those. I liked the Element though.

I liked the element too. And I sort of liked the Milan… otherwise, meh. good riddance.

The choice of US president is Cadillac and my choice is to buy also a Cadillac. nMy liking is on STS model of Cadillac which is looking glorious in exterior.nAlthough your post defines about too many model of cars, but I want to get the idea of new STS Cadillac some more.
