For those people who like Porsche 911′s but only have the credit to take out a loan of no more than $40k, the choice has always been clear: a Porsche Boxster. And while the performance of these low-end coupes have been off the charts, there isn’t much to say for the mundane and bland styling. So what has Porsche done to change that? Nothing! Instead, these fun loving Germans are toying with the idea of a super fuel efficient 3-cylinder engine for the 2012 Boxster.

To keep on pace with the average horsepower mark of previous Boxsters- about 200- this small engine would have to boast some serious supercharging, direct injection and other technological goodies. The 3-cylinder model is not set in stone, however, as Porsche’s also taking a serious look at a turbocharged inline four as well.

But why even ditch the flat six that Porsche’s so commonly known for in the first place? All of this internal redesigning is a result of strict new emission guidelines worldwide- small engines mean less emissions.

I think it’s fair to say that eco-terrorism has taken new form in a 3-cylinder sports car
