Racing Blip: 12 hours of Sebring

Audi Qualifies 1,2,3 in P1

Saturday is the 60th running of the 12 hours of Sebring. Which also happens to be kick off of both the American Le Mans Series AND FIA World Endurance Championship. Qualifying happened today. Race starts Saturday @ 10:30am EDT. All 12 hours will be streamed live (in HD). A two hour recap will air on ABC on Sunday, 3/18 @ noon EDT.

Some things to watch for:

* With the collapse of Peugeots P1 efforts, many assumed that Audi will dominate P1 again. Enter Muscle Milk Pickett Racing, dumping their beautiful v12 LOLA/Aston Martin P1 for the newer HPD ARX-03a. Expect Muscle Milk to give the Audis some serious competition. Can we say Audi vs Honda?

* In GT Class, last years champion, BMW, is facing some serious competition. New Porsches for the Flying Lizards. Slightly tweaked Corvettes. Aston Martin returns to GT. And maybe, just maybe, we’ll FINALLY see the Ferrari F458s perform. In qualifying, it was Ferrari, Ferrari, Corvette. BMW sandbagging, anyone? Will Porsche make a come back?

* GTE-AM Class. Part of the WEC. Qualifying mirrored GT: Ferrari, Ferrari, Corvette. Of particular note, Michael Waltrip (of Nascar fame), is racing in a Ferrari F458 Italia in this class. Qualified 6th. It’ll be interesting to see how he fares with right handed turns, debris on the track, racing for 12 hours, driver changes, and…and…headlights that are not only functional, but real!

Wanna watch? ALMS really has stepped it up this year with a slew of ways to view all 12 hours of the race. Head over to their site for details.
