SCCA Autocross: The Art of Cone Racing

Autocross Racing

If you have:

A. A car
B. Played more than 40 hours of Gran Turismo or Forza 3 and
C. Some cash and the desire to race in real life, then why the hell are you not autocross racing!?

Every summer the Utah Region of the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) hosts a slew of solo racing events known as “autocrosses” in parking lots and venues across the state. These sanctioned events are open to anyone with any type of car interested in actually racing. To keep things fair and entertaining, the SCCA breaks the attendees out into classes according their cars capabilities. That way you’re not in a group of highly tuned Z06’s with your slightly underpowered and definitely overweight VW GTI.

If, for some reason, you are unfamiliar with autocross racing, think Rally style racing where it’s just you and your car versus the clock. There’s something admirable about someone who actually flogs their daily driver around a cone course every weekend. I recently had the chance to sit down and talk with such a person by the name of Grant. His daily driven Mazdaspeed 3 and “natural” driving ability helped propel him to top rookie honors during last year’s solo autocross competition. Watch as he tells us a little about his story and what he looks forward to this season:

To learn more about SCCA autocross racing and how you can get involved visit utahscca.com. For all you noobs (like myself) I found this thread to be extremely informational. The 2011 schedule is already out with events planned throughout the summer. Here’s a quick look at what they have planned for next month:

April 3rd- Maverick Center Parking Lot
April 16th – Miller Motorsports Park West Paddock
April 17th – Miller Motorsports Park Midway Paddock

There are plenty of opportunities to get off your butt, jump in your trusty old WRX, Taurus SHO, or whatever it is you drive and get some cone killing track time in!

I was talking to a dude at the store the other day who was running that autocross event in his bone stock 97′ Miata. Said it was the funnest thing he’s ever done. Awesome video.

I have not autocrossed much for a few years. But it was a ton of fun. And the first time I got FTD is still one of the greatest days I have had in a car. Mainly due to how frustrated that DSP Corvette guy was with me :) I highly recommend it for people wanting to have fun or for people who just want to find the limits of their car in a relatively safe environment. BTW, I was rookie or the year back in 2000. So congrats to Grant from one ROTY to another…

There are autocrosses in just about every town in the country.  You can find a huge list searchable by zip code at http://www.MotorsportReg.com/calendar
