SEMA 2012 – Scion FR-S Feature

Toyota FRS AE86 SEMA 2012

We’re here at SEMA 2012 in Las Vegas. It’s officially our favorite car show in the entire world.

Inevitably, every year there are a handful of cars that enthusiasts gravitate toward. This year, the clear favorite is the Scion FR-S. It won the 2012 SEMA award for Hottest Sport Compact, which is a no-brainer

Amazingly enough, the FR-S has been here almost exclusively, and so far, we haven’t seen a single Subaru BRZ. There must have been a memo we missed because we’ve seen a LOT more BRZs around the streets of Salt Lake City, UT than its Scion counterpart. (If you know why the SEMA exhibitors are exclusively showing the Scions, we’d love to hear any of the inside scoop.)

UPDATE: We spoke with Scion corporate who said they didn’t cut any sort of deals with exhibitors to show the FR-S exclusively. Instead, they reasoned that since they’re actively advertising the car, and with it’s $3k lower price tag, it’s selling 4:1 over the Subie.

This car holds a special place in my heart. Growing up, I absolutely loved the Toyota MR2. Every time I saw one, I would give my driving mother a heart attack with my squeals of delight.

The FRS is the modern-day MR2. It’s light weight, rear-wheel drive, decently powered (but definitely not overpowered), and it looks attractive.

Here are some examples of the FRS that we’ve seen at the show so far (keep your eyes peeled for the Toyota FRS “GT 86″ that we don’t get on our shores). Write in the comments and let us know which is your favorite.

I dig the Orange one, top row, middle.

Good looking wheels and I love the tailpipe configuration. Personal fave is 2nd-row left. I love the blue on white color combo.
