Car collectors go crazy over serial number 0001s. The earliest Corvette for example sold for nearly $1 million at Barrett-Jackson a couple of years ago. But what of cars that aren’t exactly popular? Take this 2001 Pontiac Aztek for example. You are looking at the first one built. Somebody thought it would be worth hanging on to and only drove it 8,000 miles and has kept it looking immaculate. Most people will agree, the Aztek is one of the ugliest cars of this generation. There is not a single angle that it looks good. Funky to be sure. Built on a shortened Pontiac Montana/Chevy Venture chassis (not a good start right off the bat!) and powered by a 185 HP 3.4L V6 with a 4 speed automatic. They sold so poorly in fact that they stopped production in 2005 but the last new one wasn’t sold until 2007.
Now days a used 2001 Aztek is worth roughly $2800 according to Kelly Blue Book. But remember this is serial number 1. The car is currently offered on eBay and as of this writing there are 4 days left for the auction with a high bid of $14,322 and a reserve still not met! I would love to see what kind of person thinks this car is worth bidding six times its value and I’d also like to meet the guy who thinks it is worth even more than that considering it hasn’t met the reserve cost! The absolute best part about the listing? The seller who thinks clearly thinks this car is the bees knees doesn’t even know how to spell the model correctly. Its Aztek not aztec!
This got us thinking. What are the ugliest cars of the last 20 years?
We’ll be sure to keep you posted on the final selling price or highest bid if the reserve is not met.
UPDATE: With hours left and a high bid of $14988.88 and a reserve still not met a Buy It Now price was added to the listing of $18,999. Wishful thinking?
UPDATE: The auction is now over with a final bid of $14,988.88. Imagine that! No one wants to pay $19k for a piece of crap.
