Rhys Millen To Bring New Hyundai To Pikes Peak

Hyundai Genesis RMR PM580When your own record you set last year is at stake your motivation for defending it is quite strong.  Just ask Rhys Millen.  Last year Rhys set the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb record at 9:46.164.  The record was set in a race prepped Hyundai Genesis Coupe.  An easy choice for someone who is famous for using Hyundais as drift cars.  This year’s car, the Hyundai Genesis RMR PM580, is a new kind of monster.

There actually isn’t much Hyundai in this car at all.  It may be powered by a 4.1L turbocharged V6 that pumps out 800+ hp but that is where it stops.  The chassis came from a 2005 Daytona Prototype and is mid-engined.  Not at all like a the 3.8L Genesis Coupe on which it tries to impersonate.  The 4.1L engine started life as a 3.8L found in the Coupe but was completely rebuilt, stroked, and turboed to aid in its quest for hill climbing domination.  Power is put to its wheels via a six-speed sequential gear box.  The car is only geared for a top speed of 148 mph, 2 mph slower than the Peugeot 206 T16 we showed earlier in the week.  But when there are 156 turns and you are racing at elevations of up to 14,000 ft, top speed is irrelevant.  We shall see how the two compare on race day this Sunday.
