It was 1997. Plymouth brought us the fantastic looking Prowler. With the hot rod movement in full force street rods were the stars of car shows across the nation. The Prowler brought both the old and the new together. The beautiful, classic look of a hot rod while having all the added creature comforts of the modern car. The styling was so popular that the retro styling movement was sparked by this very car. So what’s the problem?
Need I say it? Plymouth put a puny 253 hp, 3.5L V6 under the hood. WTF? Thats about as far the opposite direction of a hot rod you could go! It had ample power but wasn’t the loud beast it should have been. A few years after the Prowler went out of production Dodge brought back the Hemi, a 370 hp 5.7 liter V8. It was originally put into the Ram trucks but eventually worked its way into the Charger and Challenger. Then, I had an epiphany. Why not stuff one in a Prowler? The problem is the Prowler wasn’t designed to house such a large motor. But don’t fret. The boys at Performance Innovations of North Carolina were up for the task.
They managed to fit the newer SRT version of Hemi, the 425 hp 6.1 liter V8. Now thats the ticket! To make it fit they had to remove the side panels and added what looks like the classic hot rod style hoods on either side of the motor. Personally I would have left it open to show off that beauty. The hood also had to be modified in order for it to fit. For that they opted for a ‘Cuda style shaker scoop. That said, I’ll let you feast your ears upon the noise of that V8!
