Weekend Pick: Nissan GT-R vs BMW M3

It’s an odd match up it is, this week’s Weekend Pick. We’ve put a Nissan GT-R and a BMW M3 head to head so instantly things like performance, looks, pricing- all of the traditional elements that help people pick one vehicle over another have now been thrown out the window. Instead BMW and Nissan represent a whole other division of ‘car fandom’: brand loyalty.
On the right side we have the BMW M3, representing the elegant and refined portion of this Weekend Pick with a four generation family creed to maintain. Performance stats? They’re as good as you can hope for from a coupe that’s just below supercar status. But refinement and stats aside, the M3 will be chosen by people who love BMW as an idea. As Richard Hammond so elegantly put it, “BMW could slap their badge on a dead cat and people would buy it.” Just like supporting a favorite sports team then, BMW’s emotional attachment with customers will keep them coming back through the good and through the bad. The M3, however, is diffidently good.
Now, take everything you’ve just heard about the M3, forget it, and meet the Nissan GT-R. To those BMW fans who like the idea of ideas and dead cats, Nissan lovers remain an enigma for their blunt love of Japanese technology, performance, and tuning. The GT-R then is their diamond in the rough. It’ll set you back $80k but in return you sit behind the wheel of a machine that gives even the top dogs at Ferrari, Porsche and Lamborghini a serious run for their money at a third the cost. Technology abounds in the GT-R and for the folks who think ‘stock’ is a dirty word, this Nissan has nearly as many tuning options as a the old Skylines did. Japan has a new Emperor in town.
P.S. Congrats to the Pure Breed Farm Mule, winner of the last Weekend Pick.
