Ford GT40

Ed. note: This is part 2 of a 3 part series on Ford GT40s.

Ford GT’s make up some of the more interesting participants at vintage racing events. As I mentioned in my last article, Ford GT swagger continues to this day. Those driving street versions proudly park their wheels where people like me can gawk. On the track, Ford GT’s feature a fluidity of motion shown in few other vehicles.

Mike Zappa owns this black beauty. Mike tells me, “This car is an early GT40R as produced by Superformance. South Africa is the location of the factory.

Olthoff Racing (there’s that Olthoff name again!) has performed a lot of the modifications to make this Mark 1 a competitive race car. For example, custom brake ducting, all aluminum Insulated fire wall, CV joints in lieu of rubber donuts. Holman Moody provided the race motor true to the Mark 1 specification….302 cu.in. During its last 2 years of competition that car has continually been upgraded. Custom heat shields, widened rear wheels, Timken bearings, custom aluminum race seat etc.

The car is registered in the Shelby book since Superformance has purchased the rights to produce the car. It is 98% as per the original. My next goal is to have the car FIA certified. By the way the car is for sale for $175,000.”

Any takers out there?

See you at the track
