SCCA Trans-Am No. 22 Alegra Motorsports/Vitalz Jaguar XKR

Pictured is the Number 22 Alegra Motorsports/Vitalz Jaguar XKR racing in the recently revived Trans-Am series. This XKR is powered by a Ford push rod V8 and has a tube chassis.

SCCA Trans-Am is one of the oldest race series in North America. Starting in 1966, Trans-Am racing became known for many things. The “pony car” era, where American Muscle battled it out on the track for bragging rights – Mustangs, Camaros, Firebirds, Challengers, etc. Later, banning Audi from racing because of it’s “unfair advantage” Quattro all wheel drive system.

As is the case of most series, cost escalation made the series entrants dwindle to those only with the deepest pockets or corporate race programs. By the end of 2005, it had died a slow death. And let’s be honest, other racing series, had gained more interest, better TV coverage, and were less costly to run in. Think Grand-Am, SCCA World Challenge, America Le Mans Series, etc.

In 2009, Greg Pickett (owner of Muscle Milk, races in LMP1 in ALMS) helped to restart the series. Reverting back to some of the more classic regulations from the 60′s and 70′s, such as cost restrictions and allowing multiple classes to race at once. This also opens up another avenue for amateur races to move up to “the pros”.

Let’s hope, with Mr. Pickett’s guidance, the series can return to it’s glory days of America’s premier road racing series.
