Will The Next Corvette Be A Small Turbo V8?

C7 Corvette

Time to fire up the C7 Corvette rumor factory again! The last whisperings of the next-generation Corvette being a mid-engine American are now taking second place to “confirmed” speculation that the new Vette will take advantage of a V8 engine that displaces slightly more than 3 liters. Small, no? It definitely is, especially considering the fact that the current production C6 base model packs a massive 6.2L powerplant. So, for all intents and purposes, the next Corvette will have an engine half the size of the current one.

To make up for power, Chevy will opt for a good ol’ turbocharger, maybe two. Paul Eisenstein at The Detroit Bureau says a high-ranking GM exec confirmed this to him, also saying that the motor will be designed to run in excess of 10,000 RPM. Speculated power, you ask? Over 400-horsepower! And while this certainly isn’t an Earth-shattering number in and of itself, that does give it an astounding 125-horsepower per liter, or one “original-Miata-per-liter”.

Throw that in a mid-engine Corvette design and GM, you’ll have my money. Or my bank’s money, really…
